CLAY SCHOOL BASICS

WORKSHOP SESSIONS

Classes are available in either 4 or 6 Week Sessions

  • Adult (Age 16+) / 3 Hour class / 1 class per week
  • Kids (Ages 6 to 10) / 2 Hour class / 1 class per week

Full payments are required to secure class spot

Any currently offered MQuan Studio website discounts are not applicable for Clay School classes

TOOLS

  • Basic tools are available for communal use AT the studio on a first come first serve basis
  • Kemper pottery tool sets are available for purchase onsite for $25 or you may purchase your own / BAILEY SET / KEMPER SET
  • Not provided at the studio:
    • Apron
    • Towel
    • Favorite tools
    • Respirator (when needed)
  • ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN TOOLS – X-ACTO blades, small sharp instruments or any tool that has a removal blade, or sharp prong. Anything small and sharp that can get lost in the clay. NO EXCEPTIONS 

CLAY

  • Clay is included with the class fee
  • Clay body / TBD / Suitable for hand building & throwing- We are currently testing 4 Cone 6 clays

GLAZE

  • 3 glazes- Clear, White, Black
  • Seasonal color 'Glaze du Jour' 
  • White Slip

FIRING

  • Cone 6 Electric Kiln Firings
  • Cost: .03 per cubic inch for bisque & .03 for glaze firings

EQUIPMENT

  • Electric Kiln
  • 6 Throwing Wheels
  • Slab Roller (Arriving in March)
  • Wedging Table (Arriving in March)

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR EACH SESSION

  • Week 1:
    • Introduction and review of Studio Operations, Guidelines & Rules
    • New Students – We begin with basics / Clay maintenance & reclaim / Pinch pots & coiling for hand building / Centering & opening for wheel
    • Returning students may continue to work on their own projects
  • Week 2 – 5
    • Demo’s
    • Ongoing individual projects
  • Week 4 or 6 (Last class of session)
    • Discussion, review, questions
    • Finalize and finish all work
    • Group clean of studio and shelves

CLAY SCHOOL- GENERAL STUDIO GUIDELINES

  • We have a studio dog, no outside pets allowed
  • Attendance is only permitted for the class & session you are registered for
  • Library Rules
    • Keep conversations quiet
    • Phone calls must be taken outside
    • Music in earplugs / without sound leakage
    • No hair dryers for drying clay
  • No Storing of personal possession at the studio, on class shelves or under tables, all personal tools and supplies should be taken with you at the end of class
  • Any recycling or food waste must be taken with you
  • Clay School is not responsible for the loss or damage of work or personal property
  • Clay School is smoke free, alcohol free, drug free
    • Intoxicated students will be required to leave the studio
  • No students are permitted to remain in the building after closing
  • Clay School is not a production studio and cannot accommodate large volumes of work due to limited materials, shelf space and kiln space
  • Not provided at studio, please bring for personal use
    • Water for drinking
    • Phone charger

CANCELLATION POLICY

If you signed up for a class, workshop, or open studio session a credit will be issued up to 3 weeks from scheduled start date. Credits must be used within 1 year of issue. We do not offer refunds

MAKE-UP POLICY

We are a very small studio with limited class offerings and do not offer make-ups for missed classes. However, we will do our best to find a time for you to make up a maximum of 1 class per session, within the dates of the enrolled session, but it is not guaranteed

*In the event of low-enrollment, workshops may be cancelled up to one week before the scheduled start date. In this case a refund, credit or transfer to another class will be available

*Clay School reserves the right to dismiss any student, without refund, for behavior that is disruptive to the community and learning environment. Clay School may refuse admission to students with a past history of unacceptable behavior

FAQ

I’m not in a class. Do you offer drop-off firing services? We only fire work that is made during a class at our studio

I’m only in town for a day, can I book studio time or come for one class? At this time we only offer sessions of 4-6 classes

What if I just want to try before I sign up? We are working on some INTRO classes TBD

Can I bring my friend, pet, or child with me to the Clay School? The Studio is only open to currently enrolled students. Friends, children and pets of students are not allowed to hang out or make use of the studio. There are studio dogs, and outside animals are not permitted

I’m signed up for a class but will need to miss one. Can I attend another class or send a friend in my place? Only the enrolled student may attend class. We do not offer make-up classes if you miss a class, but will do our best to try to offer a maximum of 1 missed class which must be within the dates of your enrolled session

Can I come into the studio outside of my class time to practice or finish work? All work must be finished during the scheduled class time or a Sunday Studio Session. We are currently working out terms for a Sunday Open Studio TBD

What is the typical turn-around for firings?
Students should expect to wait 2-4 weeks in between each firing.   

Do you offer project consultations or fabrication services?
No we do not 

Does the Pottery offer private lessons or group events for birthdays, parties, etc.? 
Not at this time, but send us your request  

Do you offer financial aid of any kind? 
Not at this time
